Three Gold's at National School Regatta

It was a great weekend for Glasgow Schools at the National Schools Regatta at Nottingham.

Top performance of the weekend goes to Josh Armstrong and Gavin Horsburgh who won Championship doubles in a truly World Class row against GB Internationalists Chris Lawrie and Fraser Russell. They boys time was the best time of the weekend in relation to World Gold Standard - A standout result.

Not to be outdone Alex Rankin and Holly Wicklow continued to dominate Junior
pairs winning in the same style that brought victory at GB trials in April. They are now the fastest pair in Britain.

India Somerside and Beky Nielson put their stamp on the J16 pairs event winning the time trial, semi final and final in a commanding performance.

All six athletes are on target for GB selection latre this summer.

Mention should also be made of Barat Bouteleb, Rachael Cannon and Frank Murray who all competed at this level for the firs time gining valuale experience of what it takes to compete againt the best in Britain.

National Schools Regatta Nottingham 21-23rd May

Glasgow Schools sends its strongest team yet to the National Schools Regatta in Nottingham.

We have four boats racing in Championship events that are  capable of winning a medal.

The boys J18 quad - Seb Glen, Callum Urquhart, Gavin Horsburgh and Josh Armstrong have being going well in training and hopefully can put pressure on the top quads from the likes of Borlase, Northwich and Pangbourne.

The Girls J18 pair Alex Rankin and Holly Wicklow dominated the GB trial race but will face new challenges from club pairs eager to mark against arguably the top pair in the country.

The boys J18 double of Gavin Horsburgh and Josh Armstrong keep putting on more speed as they develop their race rate. They could  have the speed to better the Borlase double of Lawrie and Russel both who represented GB last year.

The Girls J16 pair of India Somerside and Becky Neilson will be hoping to medal as they take on the top J16 pairs in GB in a race that will help show what pairs will be in contention for the GB J16 team later this summer.

Racing for the first time a this event are Rachael Cannon and Barat Bouteleb in Championship pairs and Frank Murray in J16 sculls. Both these boats will gain valuable experience from this top competition.

Good luck to them all.

National Schools success

The performance group from Glasgow Schools excelled themselves at Nottingham over the weekend qualifying five out of six boats for finals and winning two golds and a silver medal.

Both the Girls J16 4 ( India Somerside, Becky Nielson, Alex Rankin, Holly Wicklow ) and Boys J16 sculler ( Josh Armstrong ) established themsleves as possible GB candidates by winning their respective events. The real test will come at the trial race at the end of June.

The Girls four coxed by Kit Morris won Silver in Schoolgirls J18 fours beating ASRA into bronze medal place and chasing Henley down to the line. In J16 fours the form book was blown apart when they raced Queen Elizabeth High School and Lady Eleanor Holles to the 500m and then established a solid lead which extended all tha way to the line.

Josh Armstrong won the time trial, won his semi by 150 metres but was pushed to the line in his final by George Lawton to win by 5 seconds. With Giacomo Galano of Clydesdale taking bronze.

In Championships Doubles Gavin Horsburgh and Josh Armstrong improved performances throughout the day to finish fourth in the final in a race dominated by Westminster School. This was a great experience for our young double who will be back next year.

The Boys Junior 18 four ( Andrew Dickson, Seb Glen, Finlay Watson, Callu Urquhart cox Helena Alexander ) also improved throughout the day to finish fifth in the final
